Training
Training is offered several times a year, in a variety of convenient locations, dates and times, for adult leaders, youth leaders and members, covering outdoor skills, program planning, and youth protection. In addition, specialized trainings are offered to ensure quality and safe crew activities. Other trainings are also offered throughout the year by Venture crews or Explorer posts, and may include First Aid/CPR, scuba, shooting sports, wilderness survival, map and compass/GPS. The possibilities are endless when your crew utilizes our consultant list!
University of Scouting : The University of Scouting is Northern Star Council's largest training program for youth, Venturing leaders, District & Council Leaders, and Scouting Professionals. University of Scouting provides a wide range of classes for all levels of Scouting--from brand-new leaders to seasoned veterans. There are also specialty classes for those wishing to update their knowledge or learn new and different skills.
Kodiak : Leadership and service to others are two key tenants of Venturing; combine these two elements and you get the concept of "the servant leader." Servant leadership as a philosophy teaches that the leader works with and through a team to accomplish the mission. Rather than just talking about leadership, the new Kodiak course teaches useable, relevant leadership skills that every teen can use as part of a challenging outdoor trek that uses nature as a classroom!
Venturing Fast Start : All new adult leaders need to complete the "Fast-Start" training as soon as they begin. This training is available online and is easy to use. You can go through the information at your own pace, and you can do it when it fits into your schedule. Be certain to fill out the response form after you have completed the training(s). This information is necessary to update our training records.
Venture Crew Training : Designed to provide youth and adult leaders with all of the basic information needed for operating a crew, this basic training is broken into five sessions that last a total of five hours. The new Youth Protection Training for Venture Leaders is included in the training. For more information contact Bob Thielen.
Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) : Designed to help teach all youth the attitudes and skills that good leaders demonstrate, the training is broken into four categories: Vision, Communication, Organization and Synergism. The Venturing Leadership Skills Course was specifically designed to be experienced by the entire crew. The skills learned will easily be applied anywhere. This training is very "hands-on", with a lot of fun activities built in. This is a great way for a crew to train up and plan for the coming year. Crews can also use kits that the Northern Star Council has put together to conduct their own training. The kits contain the syllabus, training materials, and the videos, and can be checked out from Bob Thielen.
Leadership Skills Sessions :These seminars, put on through the Venturing Program of the Boy Scouts of America, cover leadership, team-building & ethical decision making for high school age youth.
Youth Protection Training :is to inform leaders of national Youth Protection policies and guidelines. This training is available "online".
Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat Training : is now available online.
